Commercial farming of river Pangasius in Southeast Asia has a strong potential to be sustainable - however, current use of open cage aquaculture systems along with little or no management creates conservation concerns. Catfish farmed in the US are considered more environmentally responsible.
Fishy Fact: In Asia - Pangasius is commonly sold as an aquarium fish? Unfortunately, these fish have very poor eyesight and in their native habitat are extremely sensitive to movement and disruptions. As a result - Pangasius have a strong and quick “flight instinct”. When stressed in an aquarium environment, Pangasius flee aggressively - often resulting in “stunning injuries”.
