Pacific Cod & Pollock Update: Landings Slowdown Ahead of Summer Salmon, Alaska Cod Prices Rising

May 5th, 2025 - As the pollock “A” season wraps up in both Alaska and Russia, combined harvests from the two countries have reached over 1.7 million metric tons—about 40% from Alaska and 60% from Russia.

SINBAD
Alaska has landed roughly 44% of its total allowable catch, totaling over 678,000 metric tons, while Russia has landed about 42% of its TAC, just over 1 million metric tons. Both countries saw an increase to their TACs for 2025.

The pace of pollock fishing in Alaska is tracking slightly ahead of last year, whereas Russia’s harvest appears to be slightly behind. Landings from both countries are expected to slow now as the industry shifts focus toward the summer salmon season.

Alaska pollock’s “B” season should ramp back up around mid July/August - simultaneously as the summer salmon season starts winding down, while Russia’s pollock harvest typically picks back up around October.

Turning to Pacific cod, Alaska’s landings appear to be tapering off following the “A” season peak. So far, around 80,000 metric tons—about 50% of the TAC—have been harvested. Based on current trends, we anticipate a steady pace through the remainder of the year, with approximately 70,000 metric tons still to be harvested.

In Russia, Pacific cod landings remain consistent year-round. To date, around 46,000 metric tons—or 34% of the TAC—have been landed. Based on historical patterns, we estimate that roughly 50,000 metric tons remain to be harvested by year-end.

Our recommendation is that you secure your Pacific Cod and Pollock requirements appropriately given current trade and harvest dynamics.

Price reports are noting rising prices for Alaska Pacific cod driven by strong demand and limited supply, while Russia Pacific cod prices remain stable.

Alaska pollock fillet prices are holding firm in the U.S. wholesale market supported by strong demand, while Russian H&G pollock prices are softening slightly but still remain high.
