--- Upcoming Chum salmon openings in Southern British Columbia expected to return decent harvests on par with the 2016 Fishery. The 2017 outlook for Chum, released in December of last year, showed poor returns for Northern B.C expected, with decent returns anticipated for some Southern BC fisheries. Southern BC inside Chum returns were expected to support this year's fisheries, using a cautious harvest strategy, whereas the Fraser River was expected to be abundant. Summer chum stocks in the Johnstone Strait in 2016 were decent but below average throughout the area, which is expected throughout 2017 as well. A report published at the end of August reviewed DFO's Pacific Salmon fisheries, noting that through next year DFO will spend nearly 2 million dollars to target salmon enhancements and harbit restoration. Only 5 percent of the chum populations in Canada reportedly have a green or good status now, the balance falling into amber or red health status categories. According to the most recent catch data from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, 349,000 chum salmon have been caught on the Northern tip of the British Columbian coast by gill net and seine. Area D, which includes the Johnstone Strait, harvested 273,000 chum salmon by Gill net in the 2016-2017 fishery, with no data reported for the current season so far. There are two openings for Seine caught chum salmon in the upcoming weeks, where we will start seeing some returns in the Southern tip of the province. For pricing, trim C 1-3lb IVP Chum salmon fillets from the 2016 Johnstone Strait fishery were around $4.50 per pound in Vancouver earlier last month. The last headed and gutted pricing we got for Johnstone Strait Chum salmon was around $2.55 per pound on 6-9lb IQF 2016 production. We should see some current offers within the next month during the openings in October, which will give a better pricing horizon. Our recommendation for buyers in the chum salmon market would be to take a cautiounary status and purchase hand-to-mouth. --- In Conclusion, our TradexLIVE offer of the week is for IQF 6-9lb Headed and Gutted Sockeye Salmon. We have 2,400 lbs of Good Meat Colour Sockeye boxed 1x50lbs and ready for pick up in Seattle for $5.30 / lb USD.
