--- Northern Shrimp fishery managers met last week to discuss reopening the East Coast fishery after a several-year moratorium. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission met last Thursday to discuss the outlook for the 2018 Pandalus Borealis Northern Shrimp fishery. The 2016 review of the fishery showed harvestable biomasses of mostly 2013 year class shrimp. At that rate, exploitable sizes would not be reached until 2018 and 2019, which is why the moratorium was extended through 2017 this year. Final decisions about re-opening the fishery will be made in mid-December. --- In Canada, the Northern Shrimp fishery remains open. The quota for the Borealis fishery, set by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, totalled just under 20,000 metric tonnes. As of Friday, 72 percent of the quota has been harvested at around 14,000 metric tonnes landed. Several processors commented on slower landings than anticipated and most East Coast vendors expect the fishery to close in October or November after the total allowable catch is realized. Demand is strong at the moment for most contract business, so we have seen some strong pricing coming from East coast processors, even though most inventories are precommitted. Larger sizes like 150-250 count seem to be between $5.75 and $6.25/lb, whereas smaller sizes like 250-350 count are between $5.40 -$5.90/lb. We expect pricing to strengthen leading up to the anticipated closure in the Fall. --- Finally, our TradexLIVE offer of the week is for 2-4oz IQF Sinbad Pollock fillets. These fillets are #1 quality, 2017 product of China, available in Los Angeles at $1.17/lb USD.
